Not news as such but something to ponder; Many years ago I was introduced to Ubuntu by a now sadly departed friend Lente Louise Schwarz. We met only once but we remained in contact for many years united by a shared outlook on life.
Ubuntu is an African concept. It is described as “The essence of being human. It speaks of the fact that my humanity is caught up and inextricably bound up in yours. I am human because I belong. It speaks about wholeness, it speaks about compassion” In education the real curriculum is the WHOLE experience of school, learning who you are and learning to belong.
“A person with Ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, for he or she has a proper self – assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole.”
Here at Beech Lodge School we embrace the Ubuntu philosophy by trying to help our pupils develop positive attachments which will develop skills enabling them as adults to contribute to a society in which they feel they belong.
